Stones, Trees, Turtles

As in most of my previous works, "Stones, Trees, Turtles" explores artificial landscapes and the human relationship with nature. The silkscreen prints feature images taken during a three-month residency stay at Villa Kamogawa Kyoto, made in various locations across Japan – in temple gardens, zoos, and parks. Throughout my explorations and research, I repeatedly focused on the same motifs. All three – stones, trees, and turtles – serve as bridges from the earthly to the divine. Here, they are embedded within artificial architectures and deeply intertwined with human design. I chose to print the photographs by hand as silkscreen prints in a very fine halftone pattern with Gouache on Arches paper. This technique introduces subtle imperfections into the prints, giving the photographs a porous quality and tension. The positioning of the motif, and thus the white space, shifts in each and every print. Interwoven through visual and thematic connections, the images come together to tell a story about the relationship between humans and nature – and perhaps also about the fragility and subjectivity of our experience in the world and beyond.
